Chhena Kofta Curry

Odisha is a land of rich culture, beautiful temples, and delicious food. One of the most loved dishes from traditional Odia cuisine is Chhena Kofta Curry. This tasty dish is made from fresh chhena (cottage cheese), and it’s a great mix of softness, flavour, and spices.

What is Chhena Kofta Curry?

Chhena Kofta Curry is a vegetarian dish made with soft chhena balls (koftas) dipped in a light, mildly spiced tomato-based gravy. It’s both comforting and royal, often served during festivals, family gatherings, or special Sunday lunches.

Ingredients

For Kofta (Chhena Balls):

  • Fresh chhena (paneer or homemade cottage cheese) – 1 cup

  • A pinch of salt

  • 1 green chilli (finely chopped)

  • A little grated ginger

  • 1 tbsp cornflour or besan (to bind)

  • Oil for shallow frying

For the Curry:

  • 2 medium tomatoes (blended)

  • 1 onion (finely chopped)

  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste

  • 1 tsp cumin seeds

  • 1 tsp turmeric powder

  • 1 tsp red chilli powder

  • Salt as per taste

  • A little sugar (optional)

  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

  • 2 tbsp oil

How to Make It

Step 1: Make the Koftas

  1. Mash the chhena well until it becomes soft.

  2. Add green chilli, ginger, salt, and cornflour or besan. Mix nicely and make small balls.

  3. Shallow fry them till golden brown. Keep aside.

Step 2: Prepare the Curry

  1. Heat oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds.

  2. Add chopped onion and cook till light brown.

  3. Add ginger-garlic paste, turmeric, red chilli powder, and tomato puree.

  4. Cook till oil starts separating. Add a little water for gravy.

  5. Add salt and sugar (if using). Let it boil.

Step 3: Add Koftas

  1. Gently drop the fried chhena balls into the gravy.

  2. Let it cook for 2-3 minutes so the koftas soak the flavour.

  3. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.
